Methodology and excluded metrics
- Marathon Petroleum Corporation's (MPC) latest reported full quarter in SEC filings and PostgreSQL DB is Q2 2026 (ended June 30, 2026) and latest full fiscal year is FY2025 (ended December 31, 2025). The Q3 2026 column holds MPC's published Q3 2026 Market Data Summary (ended September 30, 2026) crack spreads, crude differentials, and Q3 2026 external benchmarks from U.S. EIA / BLS / Federal Reserve / IMF via FRED; monthly columns run through September 2026.
- Core operating metrics (system and regional refinery throughputs, crude oil capacity utilization, sour/sweet crude slate, refined product yields, $/bbl unit margin and cost bridge, and Renewable Diesel sales/production volumes) come from MPC's quarterly Investor Relations Data Packets (MPC-*-IR-Packet.xlsx) and historical Form 8-K Item 2.02 earnings releases (1Q18–2Q26).
- Effective Q4 2024, MPC established Renewable Diesel (including the Dickinson renewable diesel facility and MPC's 50% interest in the Martinez Renewables LLC joint venture) as a third reportable segment alongside Refining & Marketing and Midstream, recasting historical segment results back to Q1 2022 / FY2022.
- Refinery-level capacities (mbpcd across all 13 individual refineries), crude oil supply by origin (U.S., Canada, Other international), refined product sales and export volumes by product group, branded jobber retail outlets (7,882 locations across 39 states, DC, and Mexico), direct dealer locations (1,162 locations), terminal counts/storage capacities, and MPLX physical infrastructure & design utilization come from Form 10-K Items 1 and 2 (FY2017–FY2025).
- Consolidated midstream subsidiary metrics are self-reported by MPLX LP (NYSE: MPLX, CIK 0001552000, ~64% owned by MPC) in its Investor Relations Data Packets (MPLX-*-IR-Packet.xlsx) and Form 10-K/10-Q filings, including Crude Oil & Products Logistics pipeline/terminal throughputs, average tariff rates ($/bbl), marine barges/towboats, and Natural Gas & NGL Services operated (incl. JVs) vs. consolidated gathering, processing, and fractionation volumes across 6 basins (Marcellus, Utica, Southwest, Southern Appalachia, Bakken, Rockies).
- U.S. GAAP filings do not provide full standalone parent-company income statements or operational tables (Schedule I condensed parent financial information is omitted under Form 10-K Item 15), and MPLX's revenues include substantial intercompany logistics/storage fees billed to MPC that are eliminated in consolidation; therefore, consolidated − standalone subtraction is not applicable. Instead, MPLX's self-reported third-party vs. related-party (MPC) revenues, MPC's R&M fees paid to MPLX ($/bbl), MPLX VIE balance sheet assets/liabilities, and debt by issuer (MPC Parent vs. MPLX Subsidiaries) are presented directly.
- All figures are as published by MPC, MPLX LP, or the external statistical agency. The only arithmetic is splitting cumulative reported flows into individual quarters: Q4 = full year (10-K) − nine months (10-Q) and Q2 / Q3 = YTD − prior YTD (shown in italics with the derivation formula).
